The new HUSLAB building in the Meilahti campus houses the special laboratory fields and the laboratories that were previously located in different buildings. With the new building, HUSLAB is introducing new technology, which will mean quicker laboratory results. The building was specifically designed for laboratory work, which supports the treatment process. In joint facilities, operations can also be developed more efficiently and they provide a good environment for close cooperation between experts. Having a large number of specialists in one building helps to strengthen overall expertise.
HUSLAB personnel took part in building design process. The spaces in the building are adjustable, which means that the operations of the automated laboratory can be expanded if necessary. District heating, district cooling and digitally controlled lighting help to reduce the carbon footprint of the HUSLAB building.
- Constructed in 2015
- About 450 people work in the building
- Gross floor area 13,160 m2
- Innovative and environmentally friendly construction

State-of-the art technology and automation
The HUSLAB building houses one of the largest automated laboratories in Europe. The laboratory, which operates round the clock, combines up-to-date equipment with the latest information systems. In the HUSLAB building, the reception of samples and sample logistics are also extensively automated. Conveyors ensure efficient movement of samples. A special conveyor, which is the first of its kind in a hospital environment, transports the samples to different floors of the building.
“We have the best people in the sector.”
In the best interest of the patient
Providing service for patients lies at the core of our operations. In order to make our services even better, we are continuously developing our operations. At HUSLAB, you can choose the sample-collection place and time that suits you best or you can also make an appointment. Some of the laboratories are also open in the evening hours and on Saturdays. HUSLAB has about 90 sample-collection points in the Uusimaa and Kymenlaakso regions. In addition to Meilahti, HUSLAB operates in 11 hospital laboratories round the clock.
Professionalism of the staff is highly valued
Responsible, competent and committed staff is the core resource of HUSLAB. The employees are actively involved in the customer-oriented development of the activities. The extensive expertise of our personnel and continuous staff training mean that HUSLAB is in a good position to start using the latest research methods as soon as they are introduced. There are about 1,750 laboratory professionals working at HUSLAB.
The Tullinpuomi sample-collecting laboratory in the HUSLAB building is also open during evening hours and on Saturdays. The laboratory has a spacious waiting room and a separate waiting area for children. The Tullinpuomi facility is barrier-free.
“Every sample is important for science.”
Cutting-edge research and product development
High-quality research and teaching as well as innovative product development are HUSLAB's basic tasks. HUSLAB is Finland's largest employer providing training in the laboratory sector. We have close cooperation with the University of Helsinki as well as other higher education institutions and vocational institutions.
The biobank operations promote research - in the interest of the patient
The Helsinki Biobank is part of HUSLAB. It collects and stores biological samples as well as health information about the sample donors for medical research. The samples donated to the Helsinki Biobank provide a basis for Finnish biobank research. Thus, each sample helps to prevent diseases, develop treatments and promote health.
